If I had to guess, I would say that this is one of the more popular hikes on the island. This is my usual go-to hike because it's usually quite busy, and I always feel safe hiking this by myself during the day. This hike is paved all the way to the lookout. This is a great hike for strollers, children, and even dogs! If you decide bring your dog, make sure that you are going at a time when the pavement is not hot. The best time to take your pet is early in the morning or later in the afternoon. If the pavement is too hot for your hand, then it's too hot for your puppy's paws!
Alan Davis Beach:
At the beginning of the trail, there is a unpaved side trail to the right that will lead you to Alan Davis Beach and the Pale's chair. This trail is called Ka'iwi Scenic Shoreline. They are both pretty easy to get to!
Between the months of December to May, Humpback whales travel to Oahu to breed, calve and nurse their young. If you are at the lookout, you can see the whales' tails and blowholes.
Hiking Makapu'u to see the sun rise is always a gamble. I've tried four times to see the sunrise, and this was the only time that I actually saw the sun come out from behind the horizon. However, you will never be disappointed by the amazing view of the sunrise, even from behind the clouds.
What I love most about this hike is learning about the history. Do you know those little plaques at each stopping point along this trail? Well, I'm the person that stops and reads all of them! It's just so fascinating to learn about the history of the lighthouse, the homes built there, and the family that lived there. If you every have time to just take a stroll up up this paved trail, don't forget to stop and learn about the history!
